Doula Christy -Toronto West Childbirth: Childbirth Education Classes Offered

Classes are run in a rented facility in West Toronto or Etobicoke.
All facilities used are TTC accessible.
Private classes are run in the student's home.
Class Materials will be available to registrants electronically once the class commences.

Birth Preparation Class
Length: 12 hours
Format: 3 hours once a week for 4 weeks
or Weekend format, 6 hours each day for 2 days
Cost: $130.00/for mother and partner
Class Size: 3-6 pairs
This class will help prepare you for the birth of your baby. Topics covered include; stages of labour, dealing with labour, pain management, the partners roll and post-natal care for the mother and newborn.

Birth Preparation Private
Length: 6 hours
Format: 2 three hour classes or one six hour class depending on individual needs
Cost: $150.00/for mother and partner
A private version of the Birth Preparation Class allowing the you to personalize the material

Birth Preparation Refresher
Length: 3- 6 hours (adjusted to student's needs)
Format: one class
Cost: $50 - $65.00
Class Size: mother and partner
This class will be directed by the needs of the mother and partner and will include topics covered in the Birth Preparation Class

A Bit About Me

I trained as a dancer, my first love was tap and I studied tap, jazz, ballet, acro and modern dance. I attended a dance program at university focusing on Modern Dance and found myself drawn to Dance Studies and Dance Production. I am certified in Labanotation (dance/movement notation) as well as Laban Movement Analysis and Barteniff Fundamentals. I have worked as a dance instructor, a stage manager, an administrator and most recently the director of a post secondary dance program.

I live with my partner of 14 years, he and I now have two children. Our first was born in the spring of 2008 and our second, the spring of 2010. Before I was pregnant with my first, my book club read Ami McKay's The Birth House. After reading this book I became very interested in midwifery, I did some research and came across information on Doulas as well. Then, as happens, my life changed, other things took precedence and the whole midwife/doula thing fell off the map.

My birth experience got me thinking again about midwifery and doulas and I began to do some research again. I found an online program through Childbirth International and signed up shortly after my baby's first birthday. Starting the doula training opened me up to the opportunity to also study childbirth education.

So, here I am, Doula, Childbirth Educator, Dancer, Teacher, Notator and now, Small Business Owner.

What is a Doula? A Birth/Labour Doula is a Professional labour and birth support person. A Doula will provide information, encouragement and support to a labouring couple or individual. A Doula can support you at hospital or home births. Christy is available as a Birth Doula within the city of Toronto for hospital and home births.
Birth Doula Services range in price from $600.00 - $1000.00.

How it works:
Contact me at doulachristy@bell.net or 416-889-4297 and I will arrange to meet at a neutral location to assess your needs and see if we click. We will then arrange at least two* more visits prior to the birth. I will go on call for you four weeks around your due date and be available 24 hrs a day by phone during this time. After the birth I will do at least one* postpartum visit and remain available via phone and e-mail to answer questions and give support.
*the number of visits is determined by the individual needs.
